The Certificate That Breaks Everything
A dentist completes a 6-hour continuing education course on your platform. They need a certificate. Not a congratulations email with a PDF attachment. A certificate with their state license number, the specific accreditation codes from your accrediting body, timestamps that match the attendance records your accreditor requires, and the exact credit hours broken down by category (lecture vs. participation vs. self-study).
Kajabi doesn't know what any of that means. Neither does Teachable. Neither does Thinkific.
These platforms were built for course creators who sell online courses. They handle video hosting, drip content, and payment processing. They generate a generic completion certificate with the student's name and the course title. For a photography course or a business coaching program, that's fine. For continuing education in a licensed profession, it's useless.
What CE Compliance Actually Requires
Continuing education for licensed professionals operates under a set of requirements that look nothing like standard ecommerce or course delivery. The requirements vary by profession and state, but the core systems are consistent.
Accreditation body integration is the foundation. Dental CE needs AGD or ADA CERP approval. Medical CE needs ACCME accreditation. Each accrediting body has specific requirements for how courses are structured, how attendance is tracked, and how credits are reported. Your platform needs to generate certificates that include the correct accreditation codes, provider numbers, and credit designations for each body.
Certificate generation sounds simple until you look at what's required. Each certificate needs the learner's name, license number, the course title, the date of completion, the number of credits earned, the accreditation provider's name and number, and the specific accreditation codes. Some states require additional fields. Some accrediting bodies require specific formatting. A generic PDF template with a name field is not sufficient.
Attendance tracking for CE goes beyond "did they watch the video." Accrediting bodies require verifiable timestamps showing that the learner was actively engaged for the required duration. Some require periodic knowledge checks during the course. Some require that the learner cannot fast-forward through video content. Your platform needs to enforce these rules and generate audit-ready attendance records.
Credit reporting to state licensing boards is where most platforms fail completely. Many states now accept electronic credit reporting, which means your platform needs to submit completion data directly to the state board's system. This requires API integrations that Kajabi's architecture was never designed to support.
Why All-in-One Platforms Fail Here
Kajabi, Teachable, and Thinkific serve millions of course creators. Continuing education providers are a tiny fraction of their user base. Building accreditation tracking, compliance reporting, and state board integrations would serve a small percentage of their customers while adding significant complexity to their product.
So they don't build it. They offer a generic completion certificate and an API that technically allows you to build integrations. But building those integrations on top of a platform that wasn't designed for compliance means fighting the platform's assumptions at every step.
Want to require a license number during enrollment? The platform's user model doesn't have that field. You add it as a custom field, then write custom code to pull it into certificate generation. Want to enforce attendance tracking with periodic knowledge checks? The platform's content player doesn't support mid-video interactions. You build a custom player overlay, then figure out how to sync the attendance data back to the platform's completion tracking.
Every feature you need becomes a custom integration bolted onto a system that wasn't built for it. Each integration adds maintenance burden, fragility, and points of failure. When the platform updates their API or changes their content player, your custom integrations break.
What Purpose-Built Infrastructure Looks Like
The alternative is building each compliance system as its own module, designed from the start for CE requirements.
A certification engine handles certificate generation as a dedicated service. It knows about accreditation codes, provider numbers, credit categories, and state-specific formatting requirements. When a learner completes a course, the certification engine generates the correct certificate for their state and profession without manual intervention.
Accrediting body API integrations connect your platform directly to AGD, ADA CERP, ACCME, or whichever bodies your courses are approved through. When a course receives new accreditation, the system automatically updates all certificates and reporting for that course.
Automated credit reporting submits completion data to state licensing boards as learners finish courses. The learner sees their credits appear in their state board account without having to manually submit certificates. This is the feature that drives the most learner satisfaction and the strongest word-of-mouth referrals.
